Our School

NLCS Gateway AcademyGateway Academy is an extension of Bedford Middle School and Bedford North Lawrence High School. Students attending Gateway Academy are given the opportunity to work at their own pace using online courseware specific to each student's academic needs. Smaller classroom environments allow for focused 1:1 attention for students needing additional support to successfully complete the academic requirements to graduate. It should be understood that our students are still attached to their enrolled school and are responsible for following the rules of that school, as well as the guidelines established by Gateway Academy.Our Vision                                                                                   Gateway Academy walks with every student, providing the supports necessary to earn a high school diploma.

Our MissionThe mission of Gateway Academy is to ensure every student is seen, supported, and guided through their individual learning experiences, with an emphasis on accountability, growth, and perseverance, so they can achieve a high school diploma and build a foundation for future success.

Student PlacementAll students participating at Gateway Academy are referred by their enrolled school Principal. After a referral is made, there may be additional team discussions to determine if the academy is the proper placement for the student. A team will consist of (but may not be limited to) school administrators, parents, the student, school counselor, teachers, and other adults that serve as a person of interest for the student. A final determination is made to accept or deny the placement by the Gateway Academy Director.

Gateway Academy serves a variety of students in the following populations:

• Students in need of Credit Recovery.
  • Students attending Gateway Academy may be lacking credits for a variety of reasons. Our goal is always to help students recover the necessary credits to transition back to BNL.
• Students working under an Alternative to Expulsion Contract
  • Students working under an Alternative to Expulsion contract will have a specific plan in place clearly stating the expectations for participation at Gateway Academy. Students who violate the ATE contract may lose the ability to attend Gateway Academy.
  • Bedford Middle School students will work closely with a staff member who communicates with the middle school teachers to ensure the students are staying on pace with the work being completed in the middle school classrooms so the students will not be behind in their classwork when they return to the middle school.
• Students serving an Out of School Suspension
  • Students serving an Out of School Suspension may be given the option of attending Gateway Academy to stay on pace with the assignments and learning taking place in their classrooms.

Note:
Gateway Academy will participate in all NLCS weather-related school delays or cancellations.

Gateway Academy will also follow any schedule adjustments to align with the BNL High School campus.
